As I look out the window, the rain’s coming down like it’s in a race with the wind, and the cold is creeping in like it’s got nothing better to do. Honestly, it’s miserable. Every drop feels like a reminder of how far away summer is, and all I can do is close my eyes and wish I could rewind to last year.
Me and the little one were so incredibly lucky to spend three blissful weeks in Finland, surrounded by the kind of calm that only comes from being with close friends and family. The days felt like they lasted forever — in the best possible way. We spent hours by the lake, soaking up all that sun energy and vitamin D like it was my job. I swear I felt my soul just absorbing it. We ate veggies straight off the ground (I mean, who needs the grocery store when you’ve got nature on your side?) and picked fresh berries like we were in some magical garden where everything tasted a hundred times better. And let’s not forget the apples — eating them straight from the trees, so crisp and juicy, that I actually did feel like a forest fairy. Living our best, no-worries, fairy-tale life.
We also created some truly magical, once-in-a-lifetime memories. We went on a mini cruise to Sweden, where the little one ran around the deck like it was her personal playground. And then, we took a trip to Moominworld in Naantali. Now, I’m not exactly a huge Moomin fan myself, but there’s something special about seeing your kid light up with joy. Watching her meet her favourite characters — especially Little My, who’s her absolute favourite (I guess she sees a bit of herself in the cheeky little thing) — was priceless. She just couldn’t stop smiling, and in that moment, I became a Moomin convert. It was magic, plain and simple.
It was the kind of summer that stays with you long after it’s gone. The kind of summer that makes you want to pause life and just live in that moment forever, where the biggest decision of the day was whether to swim in the lake or take a nap in the hammock. Now, here I am, watching the storm clouds roll in as we brace for Storm Eowyn to unleash its full dramatic flair. And I can’t help but feel like a tiny part of my soul is still back in Finland, by that lake, under the warm summer sun.
So for now, all I can do is count down the days — the weeks, even — until we’re back in that summer magic. Until I can trade these cold, grey skies for sun-soaked days and lakefront adventures. Come on, warm weather — hurry up! Because this winter thing? I’m over it.
